Should I clean wardrobe mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might have spread behind the shelves. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or vinegar, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

It depends on the size and location. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) that you can see completely, a DIY approach is often sufficient. However, given your description of a fuzzy patch in a humid wardrobe that may have spread behind shelving, professional assessment is strongly recommended.

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold to penetrate porous materials like drywall, wood, and even textiles. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and it can add moisture. Vinegar can be a better DIY option for non-porous surfaces but may not address hidden growth.

The primary risk with a situation like yours in a Jumeirah villa is not the visible patch but the potential for extensive colonization within the wall cavity behind the wardrobe. Disturbing it yourself can release a large number of spores into your home's air. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind walls without cross-contaminating other areas.

For a confirmed case of significant or hidden mold, remediation is not just cleaning but involves containment, air filtration, and safe removal of affected materials to prevent spore dispersal. Following Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines, proper remediation should always conclude with post-remediation verification (PRV) to confirm the environment has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. This final clearance test, often involving air and surface sampling, is what differentiates a complete job from a superficial clean.
