Should I get a mold inspection or remove it myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It's gotten worse since the recent humidity, and my wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose. I'm worried it's more widespread behind the walls. Should I just get a quote for a full mold inspection, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket?

Based on your description, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The combination of its location on an exterior wall, its recent growth with the humidity, and the associated health symptom (your wife's stuffy nose) are clear indicators this is not a surface-level issue you can simply wipe away.
In Dubai's climate, mold on an exterior wall often points to a more serious problem like a hidden condensation issue or a small leak from the building envelope, which is extremely common here. The mold you see is likely just the visible portion; the main colony is probably thriving inside the wall cavity where moisture has accumulated. Using supermarket bleach is ineffective and potentially hazardous. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure of the mold, which will quickly return. More importantly, it can release a high number of spores into your air during cleaning, potentially worsening your wife's symptoms. A proper inspection involves using moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and the true source of moisture. Without identifying and rectifying that source first, any removal is temporary. For a situation involving health effects and suspected concealed growth, the verifiable data from a professional assessment is the only way to understand the full scope and get a permanent solution. |
