Should I get a professional mold inspection for black speckles?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. We only saw it when we moved the furniture to clean, and now I'm worried it's been there a while, especially with the AC running constantly. Is it worth getting a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this myself with bleach?

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, those black speckles behind your wardrobe are almost certainly mold. The wall is likely a cold spot where condensation forms, creating a perfect breeding ground.
For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause. However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in your case. Since you've only just discovered it after two years, the mold growth behind the wall or under the flooring could be far more extensive than what is visible. Disturbing it during cleaning can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the problem within the wall cavity and identify the precise moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden pipe leak, or capillary rising damp. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the species, which is critical for understanding any potential health risks and for planning an effective remediation strategy. This science-driven approach ensures the problem is solved at its source, preventing it from quickly returning in our climate. |
