Should I get black mold inspected immediately for headaches?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been humid lately and the AC unit for that room seems to be struggling to keep it dry. My wife has started getting headaches when she’s in there. Is this something I need to get inspected immediately, or can it wait a few weeks?

Yes, you should get it inspected immediately. Headaches are a common symptom of mold exposure, particularly in a humid climate like Dubai where certain species thrive. The location on an outside wall suggests condensation issues, which are common here when humid outdoor air meets cooler interior surfaces.

Given the visible growth and your wife's symptoms, this isn't something to delay. The inspection will identify the mold species and its moisture source—which is crucial, as simply wiping it away will not solve the underlying problem. In villas, this is often a small leak in the external wall or a compromised vapor barrier, exacerbated by our high humidity and constant AC use.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the dampness. They will also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to confirm the type of mold, which dictates the remediation protocol. For health-related concerns like persistent headaches, this diagnostic step is essential.

Until you can get an inspector, improve ventilation in that room and keep the AC running to lower humidity. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate the situation by releasing more spores into the air. The priority is to identify and stop the moisture intrusion first.
