Should I get black mold inspected immediately in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading. Given how bad the humidity can get here, is this something I need to get inspected immediately or can it wait a month?

Yes, you should get it inspected immediately. In Dubai's climate, that level of visible growth, especially in a confined space like a closet, indicates a persistent moisture issue that will not resolve on its own and will almost certainly continue to spread.

The high humidity we've been experiencing accelerates mold growth, but the root cause is likely a combination of that humidity and a specific localized problem. In a closet, common culprits are a small, unnoticed condensation leak from an AC pipe running inside the wall, a minor plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom, or simply severe condensation from a lack of air circulation. The mold behind the shoes is just the visible symptom; the hidden structure inside the wall could be significantly worse.

Waiting a month allows the colony to expand further, potentially compromising the drywall, wood, and even items stored nearby. For a proper inspection, a professional will use a moisture meter to find the exact water source and a borescope to see inside the wall cavity without unnecessary damage. This diagnostic step is critical—simply cleaning the visible spot is a temporary fix.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on acceptable indoor air quality and fungal spore levels, and an inspection will determine if this situation exceeds those thresholds. Given it's a bedroom, where you spend hours sleeping, identifying the species through lab analysis of a sample is also advisable to understand any potential health risks, especially if household members have allergies or respiratory sensitivities. The immediate step is to improve air circulation to that corner and move any stored items away from the area until it can be assessed.
