Should I get black wall mold checked immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with the humidity lately, the room just feels damp. Is this something I need to get checked out immediately, or can it wait a few weeks until the weather changes?

Yes, you should get it checked within the next week or two. The combination of an exterior wall, stored fabrics, and high humidity creates ideal conditions for mold growth. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, especially during more humid periods.

The black speckles are likely active growth. While waiting, you can wipe the area with a diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) to help suppress surface growth, but this is only a temporary measure. Do not use bleach, as it can sometimes worsen the problem on porous surfaces like drywall by driving moisture deeper.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source. It could be condensation from the temperature difference between the AC-cooled room and the hot exterior wall, a minor seepage issue, or simply elevated humidity in the enclosed closet space. An inspector will use a moisture meter to check the wall's water content and may recommend air sampling to identify the mold type, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and for planning the correct remediation strategy. Leaving it can allow the colony to expand deeper into the wall and spread spores to other areas.
