Should I get my AC checked for mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black spots starting to form around the vent on the wall. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache. Given how humid it's been in Dubai lately, is this something I need to get an expert to look at immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should get it checked immediately. The combination of visible black spots, a damp smell, and your physical symptoms strongly suggests active mold growth inside the AC unit or the ductwork. In Dubai's high humidity, AC systems are a prime location for mold because condensation constantly provides moisture.

Your symptoms—waking up with a stuffy nose and headache—are common reactions to mold exposure, especially in a confined space like a bedroom where you're breathing the air all night. Continuing to run the unit will only spread more spores throughout the room.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a large number of spores, worsening your exposure and potentially contaminating other areas. A professional inspection is needed to assess the extent of the growth inside the unit and the hidden ductwork. They will use tools like borescopes and, if necessary, take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.

For now, stop using the bedroom AC unit until it can be inspected. Use another room's AC if possible and keep the bedroom door closed to contain the issue. A certified mold assessment professional can provide a clear diagnosis and a scope of work for remediation.
