Should I get my family checked for black mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last two weeks, and I’m starting to worry it’s more than just a cold. I’ve just pulled out the sofa in our living room to look behind it and found a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall, probably from a hidden AC leak. We live in a villa in Mirdif, and the humidity has been awful lately. Is this black mold the dangerous kind, and should I get my whole family checked by a doctor before we get the inspection and cleanup done?

Yes, you should consult a doctor for your family, especially with persistent coughing in children. Describe the discovery of the mold and the duration of their symptoms. While not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any significant mold growth can cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and worsen asthma.

In a Dubai villa, high humidity and hidden AC leaks create a perfect environment for this rapid growth. A doctor can evaluate their symptoms and rule out other causes. The priority is to stop the exposure.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores. You require a professional mold inspection. A proper assessment involves identifying the moisture source (like that AC leak), determining the mold species through lab analysis of a sample, and defining the full extent of the contamination behind walls. This scientific approach is the only way to plan an effective remediation that protects your family's health long-term. Focus on fixing the leak, then proceed with a certified cleanup based on the inspection's findings.
