Should I hire a pro for black mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I think the problem started after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. The wall feels cold and damp to the touch. Is this something I need to call a professional company like SERVPRO for immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, you absolutely need to call a professional immediately. The presence of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum), combined with cold, damp walls and your children's respiratory symptoms, indicates a serious moisture intrusion issue that requires expert remediation.

Attempting to handle this with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root colony. More critically, disturbing the mold during DIY cleaning can aerosolize highly toxic mycotoxins and spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening their coughs and other health effects.

The conditions you describe are classic for Dubai's climate. The recent high humidity, combined with a cold wall (likely from continuous AC on the other side), creates massive condensation, providing the perfect environment for mold proliferation within the wall cavity. This is a systemic building envelope issue, not just a surface problem.

In the UAE, professional remediation companies like ours follow strict IICRC S520 protocols. This involves engineering controls to create negative air pressure and contain the spores, safe removal of contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. We then identify and rectify the source of moisture to prevent recurrence.

For the health of your family and to properly resolve the issue, I recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Please contact our team at Saniservice for an immediate assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
