Should I hire a pro for black mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared. My wife has started getting a bit of a stuffy nose in the mornings. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this week, or can I clean it myself this weekend?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) that appeared suddenly, you can likely handle it yourself. However, the location behind boxes suggests a hidden moisture source, like condensation from an AC duct or a small leak in the wall, which is common in Dubai's climate. If you don't fix the source, it will return.

Given your wife's symptoms, it's prudent to identify the mold type. Many black molds here are common Cladosporium or sooty Aspergillus from AC systems, which cause irritation. However, proper identification through a lab culture is the only way to confirm the species and potential risk.

Clean the visible mold with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or vinegar, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Move the boxes and monitor the spot. If it reappears within days, the moisture source is still active and a professional inspection is needed to find and resolve the hidden issue, which is often the critical step.
