Should I hire a professional for black shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled mold starting to grow in the grout between the tiles near the shower. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the smell is getting stronger. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I try a DIY solution first?

That black speckled mold in your shower grout is extremely common in Dubai villas, especially with our recent humidity. It’s likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are surface molds that thrive on soap scum and moisture.
You can attempt a DIY solution if the area is small (under 1 square foot) and the grout is not cracked or soft. Scrub with a stiff brush and a paste of baking soda and white vinegar, or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner. This is often effective for recent, superficial growth. However, professional remediation is strongly advised if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the grout is soft or crumbling (indicating moisture behind the tiles), or the musty smell persists even when the area is dry. These are signs of a deeper moisture issue that simple cleaning won't fix. In a humid climate with year-round AC use, improper bathroom ventilation creates a perfect storm for mold. A professional inspection, often supported by moisture meters and lab analysis, can identify the root cause—like a leaking pipe behind the wall or inadequate exhaust—to prevent costly structural damage later. |
