Should I remove AC wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing these black speckles and a fuzzy patch on the wall behind the curtain. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back darker. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger stuff from the store, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Based on the symptoms you've described, I strongly advise against attempting to remove this mold yourself. The recurrence after a vinegar wipe, combined with the fact it's originating from an AC leak, indicates a more serious, systemic issue that requires professional assessment and remediation.

The black speckles and fuzzy growth are classic signs of a fungal colony, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or other toxigenic species. Vinegar is ineffective against many mold types and can actually provide a food source, causing it to return more aggressively. The core problem is not the surface growth but the persistent moisture from the leaking AC unit, which has almost certainly saturated the wall's internal structure (drywall/plasterboard) and insulation. In Dubai's high humidity climate, this creates a perfect incubator for extensive hidden mold growth that you cannot see or effectively treat with store-bought chemicals.

DIY attempts with bleach or other biocides are not recommended. They are a health hazard, can damage building materials, and only address surface contamination while the root cause remains. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for environmental health and mold remediation to ensure occupant safety and prevent cross-contamination.

The necessary steps are: 1) A certified mold inspection, including moisture mapping and air/surface sampling to identify the species and spore concentration levels. 2) Professional containment and remediation of the affected area, which will involve removing and replacing the compromised wall section and treating the AC unit and ductwork. 3) Post-remediation verification to ensure the environment is safe.

Given the AC is the source, this is not a simple surface clean. For a proper and guaranteed resolution, you should contact a certified professional company like Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate inspection and to prevent further damage and potential health risks.
