Should I remove bathroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckled mold growing along the ceiling in our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. The window is tiny and the ventilation isn't great, and it’s definitely gotten worse since the recent humidity. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach spray from the supermarket, or should I just call a professional company for an assessment, and what’s a rough cost I should expect for a small bathroom?

Based on the conditions you've described—recent humidity exacerbating black, speckled mold on the bathroom ceiling in a Jumeirah Village Circle apartment with poor ventilation—this is a common yet serious issue in Dubai. The combination of our high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning use creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces like ceilings, which is a prime breeding ground for mold.

While a small, superficial patch might be addressed with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and not the root structure), your situation suggests a more entrenched problem. The location on the ceiling indicates persistent moisture, and the fact it has worsened points to an active colony. Disturbing it yourself with improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to your AC system and other rooms and posing health risks.

For a definitive solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified mold assessor will identify the moisture source, test to determine the species (some, like Stachybotrys, are toxigenic), and provide a protocol for safe, effective remediation. This ensures the problem is solved at its root, not just cosmetically. For a standard bathroom assessment and remediation, you can expect a rough starting cost range of AED 1,000 to AED 2,500, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required containment procedures.
