Should I remove bathtub mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm starting to panic because I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub and found a ton of black mold underneath. It's in our main bathroom that the whole family uses, and it's probably been growing there for months since the last time I properly checked. What's the absolute safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to more spores, or should I just call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

Black mold behind silicone sealant is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates significant condensation. The safest initial step is to assess the extent. If the mold growth is strictly surface-level and covers an area smaller than one square meter, a careful DIY approach may be feasible.
For DIY, never dry scrub. Mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution to suppress spores, then carefully scrape the silicone and all contaminated material away. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and seal the bathroom from the rest of the home with plastic sheeting. Ventilate the room with an exhaust fan during and for hours after. The underlying wall must be completely dry before applying new, high-quality mold-resistant silicone. However, discovering hidden mold behind sealant often indicates a larger moisture problem within the wall cavity. If the mold has penetrated grout, tiles, or drywall, or if the area is large, professional remediation is strongly advised. This is particularly true given your children's symptoms, as improper removal can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and industrial dehumidifiers to safely remove the source and verify the space is clean with post-remediation testing, which is a standard we follow in our own process. Given the potential for hidden growth and your family's health concerns, an inspection to determine the full scope is the most prudent course of action. |
