Should I remove bedroom mold myself or call my landlord« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been dripping a little for a while, and I just pulled the corner of the carpet back to find a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading up the wall behind it. It's been so humid lately that I guess it just went wild. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my landlord first?

This is a serious situation that requires immediate action, but do not disturb it yourself. The combination of a constant AC drip and Dubai's high ambient humidity has created an ideal environment for significant mold growth. Disturbing it by cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your bedroom, which is a health risk.
Your first call should be to your landlord or property management company. Under typical Dubai rental agreements, the landlord is responsible for rectifying issues related to the building's structure and systems, which includes fixing the leaking AC unit that caused the problem. Inform them of the water damage and resulting mold growth with clear photos. They should dispatch a technician to repair the AC drip immediately to stop the moisture source. For the mold remediation itself, the extent of the growth (spreading up the wall and under the carpet) means this is not a DIY project. Professional assessment is needed to determine the full scope, as the moisture has likely affected the wall and possibly the subfloor. They will use containment procedures and specialized equipment like HEPA scrubbers to safely remove the contaminated materials and clean the air. Simply wiping the visible growth will not address the root problem or the hidden damage. Once the leak is fixed and the area is professionally dried and remediated, you can discuss with the landlord the replacement of the carpet and any damaged wall sections. Do not sleep in the room until the source of the leak is stopped and the area has been properly assessed. |
