Should I remove black mold from AC myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing a weird, damp smell into the master bedroom. I pulled the vent cover off yesterday and found a patch of black mold growing on the ceiling around the unit. We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and never had an issue until this past humid season. Is this something I should handle myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on my professional experience in mold inspection and remediation in Dubai, I strongly advise against attempting to remove this mold yourself, especially from an AC system.
The black substance you've identified is a significant concern. In Dubai's climate, where air conditioning runs year-round, the interior of AC units and ductwork creates a perfect environment for mold due to constant condensation. Bleach is an ineffective and dangerous solution for this application. It is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold growth, and its fumes can be circulated throughout your apartment via the AC, posing a respiratory hazard. Critically, bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not address the root cause or kill the fungal roots (hyphae) embedded in the building material. This is not a simple surface clean. The mold on the ceiling indicates a deeper issue, likely within the AC unit's evaporator coils or the concealed ductwork. Disturbing it without proper containment, such as during a DIY cleaning, can aerosolize millions of spores, contaminating your entire living space and leading to more severe health and property issues. Under Dubai Municipality guidelines, addressing microbial contamination in HVAC systems requires specific protocols to ensure occupant safety and prevent cross-contamination. A professional assessment is essential. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use borescopes to inspect inside the ductwork and air quality tests to determine the spore count and species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This involves containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents designed for HVAC systems. For your health and to prevent further damage, I recommend an immediate professional inspection.
