Should I remove black mold from AC myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in our master bedroom. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked last week. I'm handy with a bleach spray, but I'm worried it's inside the unit itself—should I tackle this myself or just call a professional company to deal with it?

Black mold around AC vents is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. For a small, visible patch on a hard surface like the vent cover, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub with a detergent solution, not just bleach, which only removes surface color and can irritate your airways.

However, if the odor is blowing from the unit and the mold is inside the vent or on flexible ducting, it’s a sign of a larger contamination inside the system. DIY cleaning is not recommended for internal AC components. Disturbing it can aerosolize spores throughout your apartment, and you risk damaging sensitive coils and electrical parts. The root cause is often excess moisture that needs to be identified and resolved.

For internal AC mold, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Dubai Municipality regulations require specialized handling to prevent cross-contamination. A proper remediation will include containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and identifying the moisture source—often a clogged drain pan or line, which is very common here. The goal is to clean the system to a verifiable standard, not just make it look clean.
