Should I remove black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it now, but it's pretty extensive and has a really damp smell up close. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with vinegar and a scrub this weekend?

Based on the symptoms you've described—coughing children and an extensive, damp-smelling growth behind the wardrobe—I strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend you call a professional for immediate inspection and testing. The combination of health symptoms and visible, odorous mold indicates a potentially serious situation.

In the UAE's climate, the constant use of air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between cooled rooms and the outdoor environment. This leads to condensation, particularly on cold walls and behind large pieces of furniture like wardrobes, which are perfect, undisturbed breeding grounds for mold. The black spots you see are likely the fruiting bodies of a larger, hidden fungal colony within the wall or flooring.

Attempting to clean this yourself with vinegar is highly inadvisable. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize millions of microscopic spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially spreading the contamination throughout your home. This can exacerbate respiratory issues. Furthermore, DIY methods only address surface discoloration, not the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root system) growing within the building materials.

Professional remediation is essential. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and its concentration, which is critical given the health symptoms. The remediation process involves strict containment with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, specialized antimicrobial agents for sanitization, and, most importantly, identifying and rectifying the source of moisture to prevent recurrence.

For your family's health and to ensure the problem is resolved correctly, please contact a certified professional.
