Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s appeared on the bedroom ceiling in our Jumeirah villa. It started spreading near the AC vent after that really humid week we had. I'm tempted to just scrub it with bleach myself, but I’m worried it's more serious. Should I call a professional mold removal company or is this a DIY job?

Based on your description of black mold near the AC vent in your Jumeirah villa, coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms, I strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend immediate professional intervention. The humid week you mentioned is a classic trigger; Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for mold proliferation inside wall cavities and ductwork, which is not visible.

Scrubbing surface mold with bleach is ineffective and hazardous. Bleach does not kill mold roots on porous surfaces like drywall, and its high water content can actually feed the underlying colony, causing it to return stronger. More critically, aggressive scrubbing will aerosolize toxic mold spores, drastically increasing airborne concentrations and exacerbating respiratory issues like the coughing your children are experiencing. This poses a significant health risk.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is a controlled process governed by strict hygiene and environmental standards. It requires industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers to clean the air, negative air pressure containment chambers to prevent cross-contamination, and specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its root. The source of the moisture from the AC system must also be identified and repaired to prevent recurrence.

Given the health symptoms and the likelihood of hidden growth within the AC system, a professional inspection and remediation are not just advisable but essential. I recommend you contact our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment. We can identify the full extent of the contamination, safely remove it, and advise on humidity control to protect your family's health.
