Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. I think it might be from a small, hidden AC leak because the wall feels slightly damp. I’m worried about my family's health but also don’t want to call a professional if it’s something simple I can handle with bleach spray.
Is this a DIY job or should I get a specialist to check it out and handle the removal?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment and should not be handled as a DIY job with bleach. The presence of black mold coupled with a damp interior wall strongly suggests an ongoing moisture issue, likely from a concealed AC condensate drain leak, which is a common problem in Dubai's climate due to year-round AC operation and high humidity.
Attempting to remove it yourself with a bleach-based solution is ineffective and potentially hazardous. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating the building materials. More critically, it introduces excessive moisture and can aggravate the spores, causing them to become airborne and spread throughout your home, increasing the risk of respiratory issues for your family. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is a controlled process. It requires isolating the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure (containment), using HEPA filtration scrubbers to purify the air, safely removing affected porous materials like drywall, and applying professional-grade, EPA-approved biocides to eliminate the organism at its root. The critical first step is a professional inspection, including moisture mapping and, if necessary, air quality testing, to identify the exact source of the moisture and the full extent of the contamination hidden within the wall cavity. For a situation involving hidden moisture and potential AC issues, we strongly recommend you call a specialist.
