Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be because of a black, speckled patch I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside and has probably been growing slowly since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Based on the symptoms you describe—coughing in children—and the visible mold growth, I strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend you call a professional for inspection and remediation immediately. In the UAE's climate, with its high humidity and year-round AC use, what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg. The mold colony behind the wardrobe likely has a extensive network of hyphae (root systems) deep within the wall, especially since it's an exterior wall prone to condensation.

Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and gypsum board, which are common in Dubai construction. It only bleaches the surface pigment while leaving the organic structure intact, and the moisture from the bleach can actually fuel further growth. Disturbing the colony without proper containment, such as during cleaning, can cause a massive release of mycotoxins and spores into your bedroom's air, significantly worsening the air quality and potentially exacerbating your children's respiratory issues.

For a situation involving health symptoms and concealed growth, a professional assessment is critical. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to determine the full extent of the water intrusion and mold colonization. Remediation then involves engineering controls: setting up negative air pressure containment with HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials, and using EPA-approved antimicrobials designed for porous substrates, followed by hygienization of the entire area.
