Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. I think it might be from a small leak during the heavy dew we had last week. I’m handy with a spray bottle of bleach, but my wife is worried it’s a bigger issue and we need to call a professional. Should I try to tackle this myself or is it time to get an expert to check for moisture in the walls?

Based on the details you've provided, I would strongly recommend a professional inspection and advise against a DIY approach with bleach. Here's why:

That patch on an exterior wall is a significant red flag. In the UAE's climate, exterior wall issues are often complex, stemming from thermal bridging, minor cracks in the building envelope, or compromised waterproofing that lets in moisture from our high humidity and heavy dew. Bleach is a surface-level fix; it will temporarily remove the visible stain but won't address the moisture source within the wall cavity. The mold's root system (hyphae) will remain, and regrowth is almost guaranteed. More critically, disturbing it with bleach can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination and exacerbating health risks.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is essential. We use non-invasive tools like thermal imaging cameras and deep-wall moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source and extent of the moisture intrusion without damaging your property. This is crucial to prevent structural damage, which can be a costly issue down the line.

Our remediation process then involves proper containment, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and the use of specialized, EPA-approved biocides that effectively neutralize the mold at its root, followed by antimicrobial coating. Given the location, this is not a simple surface cleaning job.

For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution, please call our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for an assessment. It's better to be safe and ensure the problem is resolved correctly the first time.
