Should I remove black mold myself or call Dubai Marina management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only found it today while cleaning. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building management in Dubai Marina immediately?

For a small patch (under one square meter) that you've just discovered, you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, given its location in a closet and the persistent damp feeling, the underlying cause is likely high humidity or a hidden condensation issue, common in Dubai Marina apartments due to the climate and year-round AC use.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part bleach to four parts water or use a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes. This addresses the visible growth but not the moisture source.

You should also inform your building management. Under Dubai's rental and property regulations, they are responsible for the building's structural integrity. The mold could indicate a leak in the external wall, faulty insulation causing condensation, or a problem with the central AC system's drainage or humidity control—all issues they must investigate and rectify. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact species and the full extent, as what's visible is often just a fraction of the actual growth. Without fixing the root cause, the mold will almost certainly return.
