Should i remove black mold myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. The recent humidity has been brutal and I’m worried it’s gotten worse behind the clothes. What’s the most effective way to deal with this myself, or should I call my building management in Dubai immediately?

An exterior wall in a closet during Dubai's humid season is a classic scenario for condensation-induced mold. The porous materials (drywall, paint) likely absorbed moisture, allowing the mold to develop from the inside out.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt removal yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. A dehumidifier in the room can help manage the ambient moisture. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying dampness in the wall.

Given the location on an exterior wall, the root cause is likely inadequate insulation or a minor leak, creating a constant condensation point. DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix, as the mold will frequently return if the moisture source isn't eliminated.

You should notify your building management. Under Dubai's Strata Law, the building's common structure, including external walls and insulation, is their responsibility. They are obligated to investigate and rectify the defect causing the moisture intrusion. A professional inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, is needed to diagnose the exact cause hidden within the wall cavity. This step is crucial to prevent recurrence and protect your property.
