Should I remove black mold myself or contact management?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our kids' bathroom. The room always feels damp after their baths and I'm really worried about my toddler and infant breathing that in, especially with their allergies. What's the best way to handle this safely myself, or should I contact the building management in Dubai Marina immediately?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle this safely yourself. The immediate concern is the dampness; that bathroom needs significantly more ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and leave the door open to allow humidity to escape. In Dubai's climate, this condensation is a constant battle due to the high external humidity meeting air-conditioned spaces.

To clean, wear a basic mask and gloves. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface stain and can feed the root structure. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it sit, then wipe dry. The key is not just cleaning but drying the area completely and keeping it dry.

However, given this is in your children's bathroom and you have a toddler and infant with allergies, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible patch on the ceiling is often just the fruiting body; the root system (mycelium) can penetrate deeper into the building materials, especially if the dampness has been ongoing. A proper inspection can determine if there is hidden moisture within the wall or ceiling void from a potential leak, which is a building management issue.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you suspect a larger problem, contact your Dubai Marina building management. They are responsible for the building's structural integrity, and a persistent leak from a pipe or through the exterior wall would be their obligation to repair. For health reassurance, a certified inspector can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore concentration, which is particularly valuable with young children in the home.
