Should I remove black mold myself or demand professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's come back around the shower tiles in our Marina apartment bathroom. We had the landlord's handyman clean it a few months ago, but it’s worse than ever now. Is this something I can tackle myself with a special cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to push for a professional remediation company?

Bathroom mold is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. The black mold around your shower is likely Aspergillus niger, which can cause respiratory irritation and worsen coughing, especially in children. The handyman's cleaning likely only removed the surface growth, not the root system within the grout.

For a small, recurring patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution; avoid bleach as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. However, given that it has returned worse than before, this suggests a persistent moisture problem that DIY won't fix.

You should push for professional remediation. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for maintaining a habitable property under Law No. (26) of 2007. A professional company will identify and address the underlying moisture source—often poor bathroom ventilation or hidden leaks—and use certified methods to remove the mold, including antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. For health concerns with children, a professional inspection and lab-based air quality test can identify the specific mold type and spore count, providing documented evidence for your landlord and peace of mind. The key is not just cleaning but solving the humidity issue.
