Should I remove black mold myself or inform landlord?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks and I finally found the source: a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where the wall meets the floor. I'm in a rented apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and the AC runs constantly, so I know it's humid. Is this something I should fix myself with bleach, or is it my landlord's responsibility to send a professional?

Inform your landlord immediately. In Dubai rentals, the landlord is typically responsible for resolving structural issues like mold, especially when it's caused by persistent humidity from AC systems, a common problem in JVC apartments. Document the mold with photos and send a formal written notification via email.
Do not use bleach. It only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause or the underlying fungal structure. The moisture is likely penetrating from behind the tile or through the grout due to the constant high humidity. A professional should assess for a leaking pipe or insufficient sealing, which is often the case. For a small patch, you can clean it with a vinegar solution or a specialized mold remover as a temporary measure, but this is not a permanent fix. The landlord should engage a service that can identify the moisture source, properly remediate the affected area, and apply an anti-microbial coating to prevent recurrence. Without addressing the root cause, it will return. |
