Should I remove black wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's an interior wall that doesn't get much air, and with the humidity lately, it seems to be spreading. How serious is this, and do I need to call a professional cleaning company like right now, or is it something I can handle myself with vinegar this weekend?

That pattern of black spots on an interior wall in a Dubai home is a classic sign of surface mold growth, almost certainly fueled by the recent high humidity and lack of air circulation behind the sofa.
For an area under 10 square feet, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution (undiluted white vinegar) is a common DIY choice, but its effectiveness is inconsistent. For a more reliable result, use a diluted detergent solution or a product specifically designed for mold removal. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The critical step is addressing the moisture source; move the sofa away from the wall and use a dehumidifier or ensure your AC is running consistently to keep indoor humidity below 60% to prevent immediate regrowth. However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the spots are larger than a square meter, you detect a musty odor, or the wall feels damp or soft (suggesting potential water intrusion inside the wall), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg, and hidden mold within wall cavities is common. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the true extent and source of the moisture, which is essential for a permanent solution. They can also perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which informs the appropriate remediation protocol. |
