Should I remove closet black mold myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. I'm really worried it's spreading. What's the best way to get rid of it myself, or should I call my building management immediately?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention, and I strongly advise against a DIY removal attempt. The presence of black-colored mold on an exterior wall with a damp feel indicates a potential moisture intrusion issue, which is the core problem that must be addressed.

In the UAE's climate, exterior walls are prone to thermal bridging and condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the high external heat and humidity. This creates the perfect environment for mold growth within wall cavities. Simply wiping the visible mold with a store-bought cleaner is a temporary and ineffective solution. It addresses the symptom, not the source, and disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores, leading to cross-contamination and potential health issues.

Your first call should be to your building management or landlord. Under Dubai regulations, the responsibility for the structural integrity of the building, including the waterproofing of external walls, falls on them. They need to be notified to investigate and repair the moisture source, which is likely a breach in the building envelope.

Concurrently, I recommend you contact a professional mold inspection company like Saniservice. Our certified inspectors use tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to accurately locate the extent of the moisture penetration and hidden mold growth behind the wall. This is critical, as what you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. We can provide a detailed report for your building management and, if necessary, perform IICRC-certified remediation to safely remove the contamination and restore a healthy indoor environment.

For a proper assessment, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Do not disturb the area until it has been inspected.
