Should I remove kids' room mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our kids' bedroom closet, probably from the AC unit on the other side of the wall. My youngest has been sneezing a lot more lately, and I'm starting to panic about their health. What's the most effective and kid-safe way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY removal. First, keep the kids out of the room. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution. Never use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can release harmful fumes into the AC system.

However, the location is a major red flag. Mold in a closet on an AC wall strongly suggests a hidden condensation leak inside the wall cavity or the AC unit itself, which DIY cleaning won't fix. The recurring humidity and condensation from Dubai's climate will cause it to return quickly.

Given your child's symptoms and the likelihood of a larger, concealed problem, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to find the source. For remediation, look for a company that follows IICRC S520 standards, uses HEPA containment to prevent spore spread, and provides a post-remediation verification report from a third-party lab to confirm the space is truly clean and safe. This is the only way to ensure the health of your family is protected.
