Should I remove marina-facing black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. The wall it's on is an exterior wall facing the marina. What is the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface like painted drywall, DIY removal is often possible. First, identify and fix the moisture source. For a marina-facing exterior wall, it's likely condensation from the temperature difference between the humid outdoor air and your chilled indoor air, a very common issue in Dubai.

Wear an N95 mask, safety glasses, and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and consider sealing the gap underneath with a towel. Scrub the mold off the wall surface using a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only lightens the stain and doesn't address the root cause. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan.

However, since you mention a persistent damp feeling and the mold was hidden, the visible patch may be just the tip of the iceberg. Mold can penetrate porous materials like drywall and insulation behind it. For anything larger than a small, superficial patch, or if the dampness persists after cleaning, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the problem, which is crucial for a marina-facing wall where condensation is a constant battle. A proper remediation company will also perform post-clearance testing to verify the mold and its spores have been effectively removed, which is the only way to be certain the issue is resolved.
