Should I remove mold myself or call a pro for baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s gotten worse since the recent humidity and I’m worried my toddler, who sleeps in our room, is breathing this in. What's the most effective and safe way to get rid of this mold ourselves, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

A small, contained patch of mold (under one square meter) can sometimes be handled by a homeowner. However, with a toddler in the room and the mold spreading behind stored items, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The risk of improper removal spreading spores and increasing your child's exposure is significant.
For a DIY attempt on a small area, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. Clean hard surfaces with a detergent solution, not bleach, which only discolors mold and can irritate airways. Address the moisture source; in a closet, this is often condensation from an exterior wall or high humidity. A dehumidifier in the bedroom can help reduce ambient moisture. Given the Dubai climate's high humidity and the fact the mold has worsened recently, the root cause is likely persistent. A professional inspection can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is critical when a child's health is involved. They use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during removal. Look for a provider that offers a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the space is truly clean and safe. |
