Should I remove mold myself or call a professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our spare bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has a really strong damp smell that I finally investigated. I pulled out the winter clothes we stored a few months ago and found black and green fuzzy patches all over the back wall and on some of the leather bags. It must have been growing since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the specifics you've described—visible black and green fuzzy patches on the wall and leather goods in a closed closet in Jumeirah—this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and remediation. The damp smell indicates active microbial growth, which is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels, especially during summer, and the constant use of AC which can create significant condensation in poorly ventilated areas.

Attempting a DIY removal on porous materials like drywall and leather is highly inadvisable. Over-the-counter biocides or bleach are ineffective as they only remove surface discoloration without addressing the root hyphae (root structure) deep within the material. Furthermore, improper handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of proper containment and disposal to protect indoor air quality and building integrity.

For a confirmed infestation of this nature, the protocol involves expert assessment, containment of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, specialized antimicrobial treatment, and safe disposal of unsalvageable porous materials. Your leather bags may require specific restorative cleaning.

Given the climate-driven prevalence of mold in the region, I strongly recommend you call our certified team for a comprehensive inspection. We can accurately identify the species, moisture source, and provide a definitive remediation plan.
