Should I remove mold myself or call landlord first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

Notify your landlord immediately in writing, as they are legally responsible for addressing structural issues under Dubai rental law. Do not attempt removal yourself yet, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem.
The location behind the wardrobe on an external wall strongly suggests condensation mold, which is extremely common here due to the high humidity and temperature differential between our cooled interiors and the hot exterior walls. Simply wiping it away will not stop it from returning. For a permanent fix, the moisture source must be identified and resolved. This typically requires a professional inspection to check for inadequate insulation, AC condensation issues, or hidden leaks. Landlords often prefer to send their own maintenance, but for recurrent or widespread mold, an independent assessment with lab analysis can provide an objective diagnosis of the species and root cause, which is critical for effective remediation. If the landlord is unresponsive, you can reference Dubai Municipality's standards for healthy indoor environments. Keep records of all communications. Only after the moisture issue is fixed should the mold be cleaned by a method that captures spores, not just disperses them. |
