Should I remove mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Jumeirah villa has had a damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months that we just can't get rid of. We finally pulled the wardrobe away from the wall today and found a huge patch of black and green mold spreading from the corner, probably from a slow leak in the AC unit. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or is it a definite job for a professional mold remediation company, and roughly how much would that cost for a room this size?

Based on the description of your Jumeirah villa, this is a definite job for a professional remediation company, not a DIY project. The combination of a persistent smell, a large spreading patch, and a suspected AC leak points to a significant moisture issue that bleach cannot solve.

Bleach is a surface-level disinfectant and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, which it appears you have. It only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root structure (the hyphae) intact, allowing regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold by scrubbing it yourself will aerosolize a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins throughout your master bedroom, creating a severe indoor air quality hazard.

In the UAE's climate, AC leaks are a primary cause of hidden mold growth. The remediation process is technical: it requires isolating the contaminated area with negative air pressure containment, using HEPA filtration scrubbers to clean the air, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials, and employing specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root. A professional inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, is crucial to determine the full extent of the problem, which is often far greater than what is visible.

For a master bedroom of that size, assuming the contamination is localized to one wall and the associated materials, you could be looking at a cost range of AED 3,500 to AED 8,000+ for a complete and certified remediation. This is not a risk to your health or property to take lightly.
