Should I remove shower mold myself or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold I just found growing on the ceiling above the shower in our Marina apartment. It wasn’t there last week, but with all the humidity lately it’s gotten worse really quickly. What’s the best way to get rid of it properly here in Dubai, and should I be calling my building management first or just handle it myself?

Black mold growth in bathrooms is common in Dubai's climate, especially during humid periods, as the high moisture from showers condenses on cooler ceilings.

For a small patch (under one square foot) in your Marina apartment, you can likely handle it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach, then dry it thoroughly. The key is fixing the moisture source; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it’s actually venting air outside.

For larger infestations, recurring growth despite cleaning, or if the mold is on a porous surface like drywall, professional remediation is advised to prevent spores from spreading. Given your children’s coughing, an inspection can identify the species and confirm if it’s an irritant. In apartments, the responsibility depends on the leak's source. If the moisture is from your own shower condensation, it's typically your responsibility. However, if the stain is originating from a leak in the ceiling or plumbing from another unit, you must contact your building management immediately, as this is their obligation to repair under common area maintenance rules. For health concerns, a professional assessment with lab testing can provide clarity on the mold type and the most effective removal method.
