Should I remove small black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, the one that shares a wall with the bathroom. It's maybe the size of a coin, but with all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's a bigger problem. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach or vinegar this weekend?

That small patch is a common issue in Dubai, especially in closets on bathroom walls. For an area that size, you can likely handle it yourself. The key is addressing the moisture source, not just the visible growth.

Start by mixing a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or using a dedicated mold remover. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Crucially, identify and fix the humidity source—it's often condensation from the cold wall meeting humid air or a small plumbing leak. Using a dehumidifier or improving ventilation in that closet can prevent recurrence.

If the mold returns within a few weeks, if the patch is larger than one square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional assessment is recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall cavity for hidden growth, which is a frequent problem in our climate. In many cases, what you see is just the tip of the iceberg. A certified inspector can provide a lab analysis to identify the mold type and the full scope of the issue, which is necessary for effective remediation.
