Should I remove this bathroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in Mirdif doesn't have a window and I've started to see these black speckles in the grout between the tiles, especially behind the toilet. I tried wiping it with bleach spray but it came back after a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle on my own with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call in one of those professional mold removal companies?

That's a classic sign of a persistent mold issue, and it's very common in windowless bathrooms here. The high humidity from showers, combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold in grout and behind walls.

For a small, surface-level recurrence you've described, a targeted DIY approach is worth trying first. Skip the standard bleach spray; it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub the grout lines thoroughly with a stiff brush. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider adding a small desiccant dehumidifier to the room.

If the mold returns within a week despite these efforts, it indicates a deeper problem. The roots are likely penetrating the porous grout or there may be hidden moisture within the wall, especially behind the toilet where condensation from the tank is common. At this point, professional assessment is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden dampness and can perform air or swab tests to identify the mold species, which determines the remediation protocol. For persistent problems, surface cleaning is insufficient and the contaminated grout may need to be removed and replaced to solve the issue permanently.
