Should I remove wardrobe mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the back of the bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside of our building in Jumeirah. The AC unit is in that room and it's been feeling more humid than usual. I'm worried it's mold and might be affecting our health. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company, and what's the typical cost for a small area like this?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a situation that strongly warrants a professional inspection and remediation. The location of the mold—on an exterior wall in Jumeirah—combined with increased humidity from the AC unit points to a potential condensation issue, a common problem in Dubai's climate due to the extreme temperature differential between the intensely air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This often leads to moisture accumulation within wall cavities, which you cannot address with surface cleaning.

Using bleach from a hardware store is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root membrane intact. Furthermore, it can exacerbate the problem by introducing additional moisture and releasing harmful bleach fumes into your confined living space, potentially worsening health effects.

For a proper resolution, the source of the moisture must be identified and controlled. This requires specialized equipment like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to assess the wall's condition behind the wardrobe. The remediation process involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, HEPA filtration, and the use of EPA-approved biocides, not bleach.

Given the potential health risks and the complexity of ensuring the mold is truly eradicated, we recommend a professional assessment. For a small, contained area, the cost can be very reasonable.
