Should I remove wardrobe mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold on the back wall of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago and the room constantly feels damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from ACE, or should I just call in a professional company for an assessment and what would that likely cost?

That's a significant mold outbreak, and given the location and duration, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The damp feeling and timing with the humidity spike point to a persistent moisture issue, likely condensation from the adjacent wall or a hidden leak, which a surface clean won't fix.
For a patch larger than one square meter, DIY methods like bleach are often ineffective and can be hazardous. Bleach only lightens the visible stain on non-porous surfaces but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating porous materials like drywall and wood. It also releases harsh fumes in an enclosed space. In Dubai's climate, this is rarely an isolated problem. The constant AC use creates cold surfaces where warm, humid air condenses, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes on exterior walls. The mold you see is likely the tip of the iceberg; the spores have probably spread inside the wall cavity. A proper assessment involves a moisture meter to find the source and an inspection camera to see behind the wardrobe. Remediation would then require removing the affected porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial solutions. Without addressing the root cause, it will return. You can request an assessment from an indoor health company with microbiology capabilities. They can identify the species to confirm it's a common allergen and not a more hazardous type, and provide a scope of work. For a job of this scale involving structural elements, the investment in professional remediation is the most reliable path to resolving the health risk and protecting your property. |
