Should I see a doctor for post-sandstorm cough and chest tightness?« Back to Previous Page

The sandstorm last weekend was really bad and since then, I’ve had this constant dry cough and a tight feeling in my chest, especially at night in my bedroom in Jumeirah. I’ve been using my air purifier on high but it’s not getting any better, and I’m starting to feel a bit short of breath just walking to my car. Is this something I should rush to a clinic for, or will it likely clear up on its own if I wait it out?

Based on the symptoms you're describing—persistent dry cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and nocturnal worsening—this absolutely warrants a visit to a clinic for evaluation. In the UAE, sandstorms carry a significant particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) load, along with potential allergens, fungal spores, and microbial contaminants that are easily aerosolized. Your symptoms are consistent with a heightened inflammatory response in the bronchial passages, potentially leading to bronchitis or exacerbating underlying conditions like asthma.

While your air purifier is a good first step, standard HEPA filters are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fine silica dust from a major storm. Furthermore, if your AC system was not isolated or the filters weren't upgraded to a MERV 13+ rating prior to the storm, your indoor environment has likely been contaminated. The dust can settle in ductwork, acting as a continual irritant, especially when the AC cycles on at night.

For your immediate health, please see a doctor to rule out any serious respiratory issues. For your home, this is a classic case where professional environmental assessment is crucial. We can conduct tests for particulate matter levels and assess your HVAC system for contamination. Remediation often involves a full system hygienization and deep cleaning of the living space.

Don't wait for it to clear up on its own; prolonged exposure can lead to more chronic issues. For a professional inspection, call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
