Should I tackle closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to feel really damp and I’m seeing these tiny black speckles on a few of my leather bags. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago. I’m handy with tools, but is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai to check behind the walls?

In Dubai's climate, interior wall closets are prime locations for mold due to condensation from year-round AC use and high ambient humidity. The damp feel and black speckles on leather strongly suggest a mold issue, likely from trapped, stagnant air and a slight temperature differential with the adjacent room.

For a small, surface-level area (under one square foot), you can attempt cleaning with a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a specialized mold cleaner, not bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and can worsen indoor air quality. Scrub gently, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated.

However, given the location on an interior wall, the visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. The dampness indicates a condensation problem, and the growth may extend into the wall cavity itself, which you cannot properly assess or remediate without specialized tools. A professional inspection is warranted to use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to see the full extent of the problem behind the wall and identify the precise moisture source. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this requires a corrective action plan to manage the humidity and airflow, not just cleaning what's visible. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, calling a professional for an assessment is the most effective course of action.
