Should I take my kids to a doctor for mold cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I just discovered a huge patch of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai and with all the humidity lately, I'm terrified it's making them sick. Should I take them to a doctor for this specific kind of cough, or will it clear up on its own once we remove the mold?

Yes, take them to a doctor. A persistent cough lasting a month, especially when you've found a significant mold source, warrants a medical evaluation. The doctor can determine if it's an allergic reaction, a respiratory infection, or another issue, and provide appropriate treatment for their immediate relief.

The mold you describe is a serious concern. In Bur Dubai's older buildings, high humidity and condensation behind furniture create ideal conditions for mold growth. This is not something to clean superficially; the hidden extent is often far greater than the visible patch. The spores released can significantly irritate children's developing respiratory systems, worsening allergies and asthma.

For a situation of this scale, do not attempt a DIY removal. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your home. You need a professional inspection and remediation. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping to find the water source and air or surface sampling, often sent to a microbiology lab, to identify the mold type and concentration. This scientific approach is crucial for an effective and permanent solution.

Focus on the doctor for your children's health now and a certified mold inspector to address the root cause in your home. Remediation should include fixing the moisture issue (like a leak or condensation from AC) and safely removing the contaminated materials to prevent recurrence.
