Should I test and remove closet mold in my Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just found some black spots in the closet of our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We stored some winter clothes in there after the last bout of humid weather a couple of months ago and it smells really damp. Is this dangerous mold and who can I call to get it properly tested and removed?

The black spots in your closet are very likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after humid periods. The damp smell from stored winter clothes confirms high moisture. While not all mold is highly toxic, any mold can cause respiratory irritation like the coughing you're noticing in children. The priority is to stop the exposure.
Given the symptoms and location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, the mold you see is often just the surface growth; the real issue is the hidden moisture source, possibly from condensation in the wall or a minor, unnoticed leak from the adjacent bathroom or AC unit. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause. They should take samples for a lab culture to identify the species, which determines the appropriate removal protocol. For removal, do not attempt to bleach or scrub it yourself. This can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for mold remediation that proper companies follow, which includes containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe disposal of contaminated porous materials like the affected drywall or clothing. Look for a provider with certifications like IICRC and, crucially, one that operates its own microbiology lab. This is key because it means they can provide you with verifiable before-and-after lab reports proving the spore count has been returned to safe levels, not just that the visible mold is gone. This data-driven approach is the only way to be sure the environment is truly safe for your family again. |
