Should I test or clean black mold near kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather got humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is right next to their room in our villa in Al Barsha. Is this something I should get professionally tested, or can I just clean it myself?

Given the proximity to your children's room and their persistent symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a visible sign of a moisture problem, but the main concern is what you cannot see. In Dubai's high humidity, mould spores travel through the air and can colonize inside wall cavities or the AC system, which could be the source of the irritation causing the coughing and headaches.

Cleaning the visible patch yourself with a detergent solution is a temporary measure, but it does not address the hidden colony or the root cause of the moisture, which is likely condensation from temperature differences or a minor leak. Disturbing it without proper containment could aerosolize more spores into your home's air.

A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the dampness and take air and surface samples for lab analysis. The lab culture is crucial—it identifies the species of mould to assess potential health risks and confirms the spore count in the room's air is elevated. This evidence-based approach is the only way to know if the mould is connected to your kids' symptoms and to plan an effective remediation that includes fixing the moisture source and cleaning the air. For a villa in Al Barsha with health symptoms present, this diagnostic step is the most responsible course of action.
