Should I treat bathroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It's grown a lot since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, and now the whole bathroom has a damp, earthy smell that won't go away even with the exhaust fan on. Given how humid it gets here, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

The rapid growth and persistent damp smell indicate this is an active infestation, not just surface discoloration. In Dubai's high humidity, bathroom mold often stems from a hidden moisture source, like a small plumbing leak behind the wall or insufficient ventilation allowing condensation to accumulate within the ceiling void.
For a patch that has spread significantly and is accompanied by a persistent odour, a DIY approach with bleach is unlikely to be sufficient. Bleach only removes surface colour; it does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like grout or drywall. Furthermore, scrubbing can inadvertently release a large number of spores into the air. Given your villa's construction and the location at the ceiling junction, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to identify the true extent of the problem and its root cause—which is critical for a permanent solution. In many cases, the wall or ceiling cavity requires remediation to prevent recurrence. For a company's work to be verifiable, they should provide before-and-after documentation, such as lab analysis, to confirm the species is addressed and spore counts are returned to normal levels. |
