Should I treat bedroom closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have spread quickly. Given how fast it appeared and that it's in our sleeping area, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Given Dubai's high humidity and rapid mold growth cycles, a small patch appearing this quickly is common but warrants attention. For an area under 1 square meter, you can likely handle it yourself if the underlying cause is addressed.

First, identify the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or lack of airflow. Move items away from the wall and use a dehumidifier or improve ventilation. To clean, skip bleach—it's mostly water and can feed future growth. Instead, use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, scrubbing the area thoroughly. Dry it completely with a fan afterward.

However, professional assessment is strongly advised if the mold returns after cleaning, covers over 1 square meter, or if anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities. A certified inspector can identify the exact species and moisture source with tools like thermal imaging, which is crucial for hidden problems in villa walls. In Dubai, remediation must follow DM guidelines and DHA standards to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing recurrence. For a bedroom closet, where spores can easily spread to your sleeping area, a lab test to confirm the type is a prudent step for peace of mind.
