Should I treat bedroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold spreading in the corner of the master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces outside, and it's gotten noticeably bigger since the heavy dew we had last week. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get treated professionally like, tomorrow, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

That black speckled growth in your Jumeirah villa is a classic sign of condensation due to the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside air. The recent dew has provided the perfect moisture source for it to spread. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can often manage it yourself.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution (undiluted white vinegar) can be effective for surface mold on non-porous surfaces. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then identify the moisture source. However, because it's on an exterior wall and growing, there's a significant chance the issue is inside the wall cavity, which DIY methods cannot address. The mold you see is likely just the visible portion.

Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's actively spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and saturation. Treating only the surface without solving the hidden condensation problem guarantees it will return. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for property maintenance to prevent such dampness issues, and a proper assessment will determine if the wall's insulation or vapor barrier is compromised.
