Should I treat black closet mold immediately or wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of weeks ago. My main concern is whether this is something I need to call a specialist about immediately this weekend, or if it's okay to wait and just clean it myself when I have time next week?

That black mold in your closet is a sign of a moisture issue that should be addressed quickly, especially given our current humidity. The wall facing outside is a classic trouble spot where warm, humid outdoor air meets the cool interior, causing condensation that mold feeds on.
You can clean a small area (under one square meter) yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. The risk with waiting is that the colony can spread deeper into the drywall or behind it, making a simple cleanup insufficient. Given its location on an exterior wall and its recent growth spurt during humid weather, this likely indicates a persistent condensation problem. In Dubai's climate, this requires a professional inspection to identify the root cause—it could be insufficient insulation, a minor leak, or inadequate ventilation. A specialist can assess the extent and recommend the correct remediation to prevent it from returning, which a surface clean alone rarely accomplishes. |
