Should I treat black mold as an emergency this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Given how quickly things can get worse here, is this something I need to call a professional for immediately this weekend, or can it wait until next week?

Given the health symptoms you're describing and the visible growth, this should be treated with urgency. Black mold, especially when it's already suspected of causing respiratory issues in children, is not something to delay on in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for it to spread rapidly behind walls and into your HVAC system.
For now, this weekend, you can take immediate steps to contain it. Do not attempt to scrub or spray it yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. Instead, isolate the area by closing the bedroom door. If possible, cover the moldy section behind the wardrobe with plastic sheeting and tape to seal it off. Ensure your AC is switched off to prevent it from circulating any spores throughout the house. These are containment measures, not a solution. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the true extent of the growth, which is often far greater than what's visible, and identify the species. This is critical because it determines the remediation protocol. In many cases here, the source is a small, hidden water leak from an AC condensate drain or a pipe, which must be fixed first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly. While not a legal emergency requiring immediate government intervention, it is a household health emergency. Reputable remediation companies understand this and often have on-call teams for assessments. It is prudent to call for a professional assessment this weekend to get a plan in place, as proper remediation involves containment, removal, and verification via post-remediation testing to ensure the problem is resolved. |
